The Community Mosaic, inspired by the fish head logo of Pompano Beach, was made largely by the Pompano public. Eric Newcombe, aka Marbles, aka Post Relative, brought it to community markets, fairs and events, and set up tables with random objects, paints, scissors, tools, and varying adhesives so that the community could do literally whatever they felt like doing to it. Most put love and attentive care into the piece; some were rather abusive. When it felt complete, Newcombe splattered enamels and broken mirror shards all over it, and glazed it twice in resin.
The purpose of the piece is to contribute to the community: 100% of proceeds will go to charity. One of the community members to benefit is artist Celeb Funky Couture, an elderly woman who is extremely talented in cutting up and sewing together clothing, and she needs a website and catalogue of her products built. And the other is the Give Team of Orlando, a leadership program for at risk youth, that does really excellent mentoring. (And if any other important issue comes up, perhaps some of the funds will go there, but these are the two main focuses of the proceeds. The details can be negotiated with purchaser. It just needs to be legitimate community building.)
